DOWNTIME – It’s Broken
DESCRIPTION:
Downtime or “outage duration” refers to a period of time that a system, computer or network fails to provide or perform its primary function. Downtime can be caused by one or more of the following eight ingredients: human (training, fatigue), policy (standards, regulation), hardware, software, networks, payload (overloaded), environment and power (temperature, backups).
RISK:
Outages caused by downtime can have a serious impact on the users of any business, in particular those industries that rely on a nearly 24-hour service: medical, infrastructure, banks, airlines, reporting, e-commerce, telecommunications, etc…
CONSEQUENCES:
- Personnel Costs ($$$)?
- Production Costs ($$$)?
- Low customer availability
- No communications (in or out)
“Every business eventually experiences a dry spell. It’s tempting to vacation during the slow periods, but downtime can be converted into future profits by staying focused on long-term business goals.”
