NO PLANNING – Out of Control
DESCRIPTION:
An unplanned outage is the result of inactivity by the users and/or the service provider to keep the system running. As a prevention tool, planning can include changes, upgrades, routine repairs or formation of a datacenter to monitor the network. Planned activities are often scheduled as maintenance windows so that all users are given prior notice.
RISK:
Lack of planning can cause equipment failures, intermittent system bugs, erratic connections or even a cascading failure. Maintenance has to be carefully scheduled in industries that rely upon computer systems. In many cases, downtime can be averted using what is called a "rolling upgrade" - the process of incrementally taking down parts of the system for upgrade, without affecting the overall functionality.
CONSEQUENCES:
- Unable to forecast overhead expenses
- Data can be lost at any moment
- Spending on repairs grows exponentially
- Uncomfortable working environment for users
